Title: My NeXT N4000A Megapixel Display works... for 2-3 seconds... Help please?

Hi all!

A while back I picked up a second NeXT Megapixel Display, and I was *super excited* to discover that it's the N4000A model. My earlier N4000 works fine, but (like many of them) the image onscreen is very dim - so much so that it's honestly hard to read in a room with the lights on. By contrast (hah - monitor pun!), the N4000A is the later revision that supposedly fixed the issue which caused the earlier displays go grow dim over time.

I finally go around to actually testing the 'new' monitor, and this is what I'm experiencing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E4z9U8UDPhg
In short, the display comes up and is SUPER DUPER BRIGHT for a couple seconds, and then blinks out. The display is very bright, but also seems to be out of focus, and the image is hard to make out because of how the bright raster-lines are zigzagging all over the image.

Any suggestions on what might be going on here? I can reasonably assume that it might be a case of "time to recap it" but I don't want to make any mistakes getting this wonderful / rare monitor working again. Thanks for any guidance you guys can offer!

Yup, step #1 is a full recap.

(copying my response to the same message on 68kmla (https://68kmla.org/bb/index.php?threads/any-tips-on-fixing-my-next-megapixel-display.49144/), for the benefit of readers on this forum and people searching its archives later)

In re dimness: you're thinking of the N4000B, not the N4000A, unfortunately. See 5.41 of the NeXT-FAQ (https://www.levenez.com/NeXTSTEP/faq.html). IIRC the difference between the 4000 and the 4000A is the presence of the microphone in the display bezel.

My N4000A had some of the slimiest capacitors I can remember recapping in my entire recapping career. The digital board had the SMT caps that were leaking in the usual way, and the analog board had (again IIRC) 10000uF ELNA "Long Life" (lol) caps which were practically dripping with electrolyte. Regardless of whether it's the problem with your display, I would recap pronto.
