This is a pretty cool find. Finding a copy of FrameMaker before it was bought by Adobe.
I never used FrameMaker before. I had heard of it. But I always did my print layouts in InDesign (back in the day). But it looks like FrameMaker still exists and has a niche in the technical documentation world, which is pretty cool.

There was a pre-alpha copy of FrameMaker 2.0 in the NeXTStep 0.9 release. You can see it here (

I have a few 2.x and 3.x copies for Sun but there's no way to license them nowadays so they only run in demo mode. The activation was more involved than the simple serial number of the NeXT and Mac releases. I'm hoping someday a whizz-kid will make a keymaker of some kind so we can get these old versions fully functional again.
4.x changed the activation scheme so this can be activated now. I wonder if the change was related to the Windows release.
You can see some of the Sun versions in this gallery (
