Depends on the emulation program being used, because some have tools to do this.  One way that has worked for me in the past is to create an image of the hard disk using Ghost, and then restore that image to the virtual disk from inside the virtual machine itself.  Windows may complain because the hardware has changed, so it may ask for disks to install new drivers, but it should work.

Hi,

Thanks for your quick answer, do you have a tutorial or something else that can help me to do that simply and quickly and most important safely?

Thanks.

Noor.

It depends on what software you use to create the hd image, and how your systems are setup.  Do you have a second hard disk in order to save the image to, or are you going to store the image on the network somewhere.  Is the resulting image going to be too big to fit on a cd or DVD, so would require spanning multiple media.  Do some Google searching on hard disk imaging/cloning, and investigate the different strategies you can take to accomplish this.  The easiest way to do this would be if your VM software can load an OS directly off of a hard disk,  Then all you would have to do is remove the hard disk from the win98 machine and place it in the other, then tell the VM to use it as its disk.

Sorry to "punt" on this one a bit, but there are just way too many variables, and way too many ways that this can be done for me to give a "quick tutorial" about it.

Title: i use xcopy.

Find out how to build and use BartPE.  its fast & fun to just xcopy the source machine into a VM.  That's how I do it Fwiw.  Taking the source machine appart, and directly mounting its hard disk is another way to get it going.  You'll probably have to use the safe mode boot to get it running in the VM though.

How to convert a physical machine running win 98 to virtual?

Hi
what i do is this

I use "vmware Server" - http://www.vmware.com/products/server/ - its free

"gohst for unix" g4u - Harddisk Image Cloning for PCs - http://fbim.fh-regensburg.de/~feyrer/g4u/ - its free

CesarFTP - http://www.aclogic.com/  - its free

I clone the original harddisk to a local ftp-server (CesarFTP is my choise) with a "g4u" boot cd - depending on how old your pc is it might take a wihle. About 6 hours for a 6 gb harddisk with a 200 mhz processor.

Then i set up a new virtual mashine in "vmware server" - no less then the zise of your old disk. Start the "g4u" boot cd insight your new virtual machine. Put the image from the ftp server and back indside "vmware Server".

Take out the cd and restart your virtual machine.

I did this with a OPENSTEP 4.2 on white hardware - started it up in virtual machine with  boot: config=Default at the promt and chanced the drivers acording to Tomaž Slivnik´s papers that i found under the Emulation / Virtualization sektion - http://www.nextcomputers.org/docs/FAQ-OpenStepOnEmulators.pdf

My old NEXT that lost its power now lives again.  :D

PS sorry about the spelling - im from Denmark, and normaly dont write in english.

Thanks for the writeup preload, especially the links to the software.  Have not used g4u yet, as I have a couple versions of ghost that I use.  The ftp option in g4u is interesting, and have you tried it over the internet?  Lots of possibilities for this.

Thanks for the link

No only on my local setup - i run DHCP on the router inside my house. Perhaps you can get in problems with the bandwith on your internet.
But it is worth a try.

True, the bandwidth issues would limit its usefulness, but it still might be a "quick and dirty" way to make an image of a system at a remote site.  Just another possible tool in the support arsenal.  If it can be scripted or customized to hard code the options, it would be a sort of an automatic backup tool for sites having problems.
