Hello,

I own a NeXT Cube and assorted manuals, all obtained years ago from a fellow coworker who in turn had purchased them at a university auction.  While I enjoy the system (especially knowing its unique place in history) I am considering selling it, as space is at a premium.  This is not an ad, though:

My problem is that I:
1) Don't particularly like eBay
2) Don't know what my stuff is worth

Here's the list, any ideas?

NeXT Cube 25 Mhz Mono - Fair / Good (some scratches/marks)
NeXT Mono Monitor (not great, OK after warmup, but PS may be dying)
NeXT ADB Keyboard in good condition
NeXT ADB Mouse (recently repaired, in good condition)
Several SCSI hard disks, cables, etc,.
NEXTSTEP 3.3 Installation Media (CDs and floppies)
NEXTSTEP Developer on CD-ROM

NeXT Documentation Set in case (All in excellent condition except cardboard case is dinged up)
+ NeXT Sound, Music and Signal Processing: Concepts
 + NeXT Supplemental Documentation
+ NeXT Sound, Music, and Signal Processing: Reference
+ NeXT Writing Loadable Kernel Servers
 + NeXT Technical Summaries
 + NeXT Operating System Software

Small NeXT Service Programs 2" Binder
Containing original service bulletins and sales oriented docs
related to the fact that the school was probably a service center.
Of historical interest: contains price list!

Large NeXT Service Training Guide Binder
 Marked "First Edition, February 1989"
Contains printer service manual as well as other technical info.

Two (2) spare motherboards, no ram, no batteries.  (I removed the batteries some time ago to prevent leakage and corrosion, but have lost them over the course of moving a few times.)  I believe they work, though.

Any insight into the value of the above would be appreciated.  I'd like to be an educated seller.

Tom

The NeXT seems very common, so i doub't that anyone here needs that for a sellers-good-price.
Best place seems eBay for it. (just wondering, that you have an ADB mouse and keyboard but a non-Turbo machine wich needs non-ADB equipment)

is a lot more interesting :-).
Title: The ADB issue
Post by: dialt on January 16, 2006, 10:50:39 PM
I thought that ADB referred to the old style interface-- Whatever I have, it plugs in to the cube and works. :)  As I said, it's definitely non-turbo and I think is one of the older cubes around.  Is there any way to tell from the serial number?

As far as the manuals, I have access to high quality / high capacity scanners at work so I can scan the contents of the binders in case anyone is interested.  I suspect that the technical info is already available but as I said, it's cool to see from a historical perspective.

ADB only works with Turbo chipset machines and a ROM revision of v33 or above.

I should definitely get a chance to scan the binders next week.  I will try do that and make them available in TIFF format.

Title: Next Service Manuals?

Did these ever get scanned? I'd love a copy, as I am doing some NeXT hardware repair.  I'd be happy to OCR the tiff's into searchable PDF.  I'd also be happy to scan the manuals and return them, if the owner would send them to me. Any takers?

Regarding market value, you can always peek at eBay to get an idea of what similar systems are selling for.  Some of your items are probably not changing hands very often, though.

I agree with your reluctance to use eBay.  I have never sold anything there, and I hesitate to buy there.  Some of the worst crooks around are selling on eBay.  Anyway, I'm not trying to convince you to use eBay for the transaction, but searching with "Completed listings only" checked, in Advanced Search, will give you a good market assessment.  Ignore the prices in red, those auctions failed.  A quick scan of the green prices will show what people are actually paying.

I've been using eBay for 6 or so years, I have 130 odd +ve feedbacks myself and have never had a problem selling or buying in the UK,  USA, Spain, France or Japan.  Maybe I'm just lucky.
