I stumbled over this screenshot of WriteNow for Macintosh, with a copright information of "(c) 1986 NeXT, Inc.

It looks like being the first NeXT product, although it hasn't been developed by NeXT itself. Apple (Steve himself) commisioned the work for WriteNow, but went with MacWrite later on. Steve took the developers with him to NeXT.

That's a great link.  I didn't know that development on WriteNow started so early.

Odd... Wikipedia seems to have gotten it's history a little off. Both the pages on WriteNow (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WriteNow) and TextEdit (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TextEdit) seem to have over looked Edit. The WriteNow page says it was replaced with TextEdit. And the TextEdit page says that it was featured in NEXTSTEP and OPENSTEP.

Edit replaced WriteNow in NEXTSTEP 2.1 and was the operating system's default writing app all the way up to OPENSTEP 4.2. TextEdit was first introduced in OPENSTEP 4.0 as one of the demonstration apps (/NextDeveloper/Demos/TextEdit.app) but didn't replace Edit until Rhapsody.

Does anyone know where WriteNow is available to download for NeXTSTEP?

Wackymacs,

I noticed that you are the founder of the WikiProject Macintosh (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Macintosh) and that you've been heavily editing many NeXT related pages since your last post in this thread... why hasn't the TextEdit (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TextEdit)(1) and WriteNow (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WriteNow)(2) errors been addressed?

Plus I'd be curious to find out why the mistake on the TextEdit page was made, and have actually thought about asking the person (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Dysprosia) who added the error. The similar mistake on the WriteNow page can't be tracked down to this (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=WriteNow&direction=prev&oldid=41426778) version where the error was added, but there is no user associated with the edit.

You do have NEXTSTEP on your NeXTstation... Edit should be right there (right where Wikipedia says TextEdit should be).

(1) Note: The actual line in question is: "TextEdit is a simple word processor and text editor, first featured in NeXT's NEXTSTEP and OPENSTEP."
(2) Note: The actual line in question is: "Due to concerns of third-party publishers such as WordPerfect over the issue of competing with a free word processor, WriteNow for NeXT was transferred to a start-up company; TextEdit, which could essentially be considered a heavily stripped-down version of WriteNow, was its replacement."[/list]
