Hello all,
I recently purchased a 2 headed dimension cube from ebay and it came with some interesting stuff.
It was supposed to be 5 boxes but so far the 21" color display hasn't arrived, but is en route. It's being tracked and should arrive today.
Box 1 contained the NeXT laser printer.
Box 2 contained the complete 1st edition NeXT Developer's Library for NeXTStep 1.0, including a couple of duplicates (Net Admin, User's Ref, couple others). There was also a Product Guide from 1990 showing off a great deal of rare hardware and software that was available or "coming soon" as of late 1990. Very interesting and I haven't seen anything like it before. The books in the dev library have date stamps of 11/90 and 12/90, and the dupes are still 1st edition (copy written 1990) but have 4/91 printed on the back. Also included was an unused registration booklet, upgrading to NS 2.0 guide, release notes, and full sheet of stickers.
Box 3 contained the greyscale 17" MegaPixel
Box 4 contained the '040 25Mhz Dimension Cube itself TRIPLE boxed (!!!) and also had accessories like monitor, printer, SCSI, and video out cables. Most NeXT branded. This box also contained the paper trays for the printer and a bag o' softwares. Software included NS 3.3 User and Dev for black, white, SPARC, as well as Openstep 4.2 User and Dev for black, white, and (i think) SPARC and HP. The seller also threw in a blank NeXT branded MO disk.
Box 5 should be sitting on my porch as I type this from work. So if anyone is in IL and can beat me home there is an unprotected 21" NeXT color display just sitting all unattended. Hehe. If I see you taking it though, I reserve the right to "dissuade" you.
I'm not a programmer but the "Writing Loadable Kernal Servers" book looks fascinating.
My g/f says it's a thin line between passion and insanity. Considering what I've spent on eBay lately I tend to agree.
Thanks for reading...have a great weekend!
:)
omg, I don't want to know what you spent on shipping! Congrats though. Nice set of stuff to get :)
Shipping was a flat rate and was most likely grossly underestimated by the seller. I kinda felt bad, but I'm not one to complain about being on the better side of a deal.
So it was you who grabbed the dimension auction on ebay. Nice to see it went to someone who will appreciate it. :)

I certainly will appreciate it! I had friends over last weekend i was displaying and explaining my other(!) cube to a few nerdy types that showed up and the first thing some dumbass says is hey that it would make a nice computer if you gutted it and put a modern PC mobo in there. I almost tackled him, but instead just informed him that to do that would be similar to me vomiting inside his classic Chevy Nova. I still don't think he understood.
it's passion not insanity dammit!
you mean ex-friend? ;P
Man, I HATE when people do that. Sure, case mods are awesome if done right, and I wouldn't mind doing that to a Cube that was already gutten when I got it or was dead, maybe... but not to a perfectly working unit.
I passed up a 2 week spring break vacation just to buy my NeXT... lol...

Other cube ???? So how many do you have now? You may want to slow down with the acquisitions or your g/f and bank account will not survive the NeXT collecting bug. :D

LOL...I know you're right. I can't exactly drive my computer collection to work.
I have 2 cubes now and will be spending my weekend both promising my g/f that this is in fact enough NeXT gear, and doing some heavy lifting to rearrange the 5 total systems I have into a usable combo of 3 networked systems and 2 spare "closet queens" (to borrow Blackcube's term.)
NeXT bug you say...? I've got the NeXT hanta virus!. I think I caught it from Kenjay when I bought one of his spare cubes.
<edit>
wait...scratch that. I caught it 5 years ago when I was practically given a color slab and a turbo color slab. It just flared up again when I started dorking w/ the first cube about a month or so ago.

Ah, fun stuff! Christmas all over again in Chitown, huh?
And yes, it's definitely passion. Definitely! :)

Great fun too! I want to set up a main netinfo server config'd to let my other black hardwares to auto config to my net. Planning out the physical network is almost as complicated as the logical aspects.
