Hello,

I am considering selling my Sun SPARC Voyager workstation.
For those of you not in the know it is basically a transportable 85 Mhz Sparc 5. It is currently running a "patched up" copy of OpenStep User 4.2.
There is not enough room for developer.

It's got a 12" 256 Color LCD flat panel display, 2 PCMCIA Card slots, and a great little mini Type 5 keyboard. I also have a model-specifica soft case and battery (which no longer works).

I have no idea what I should sell this thing for, so I am entertaining offers.
Buy pays shipping (figure 20 lbs) from 19103.

These are pretty rare birds, and excellent and very cool looking systems to run "white" NS/OS on...

It is! I'll see about setting it up and snapping a photo.

The funny thing here is that NS and OS run better on this thing than solaris does. I attempted to load SunOS 4.1.4_U1 on there to no avail.

That's even better! I don't know enough about solaris to know why that would be.

Drivers.. I think that because of its steep price tag (as much as a midsized sedan) the Voyager did not sell. It also had the misfortune of coming on the scene as Linux began to gain in popularity. Why drop $25k on a portable battery operated Sun when you can load Slackware on a thinkpad for 1/10th the price? Regardless Sun pretty much forgot about the Voyager.  It was basically treated by Sun the way that the RT was treated by IBM or the Apple /// was treated by Apple. So I am pretty sure that the only solaris that will run on the thing is 2.3, which was not a particularly good version of Solaris. Any and all attempts to load 2.5 or 2.6 has failed and 7 is decidedly too much for its little 85Mhz uSparc.

That is an awesome little unit you have there, especially if It can run OS 4.2.  Similar designs to some of the early compaq portable II and III units, except it is color instead of a monochrome amber display.

Little gems like this is why I still love digging in piles and storerooms of "old" computers.

I can attest to these things running NS3.3 pretty well.  I used mine all the time, that is until the screen stopped working.  I remember it as the backlight overheating and melting the screen, though I doubt that was actually what happened.
