What is the weight of the different type of next monitors available. I just may have found myself a nice lot of NeXT stuff, but I can not figure out the freight cost without a more exact weight for the monitors. I looked at the brochures on channelu for some of the other weights, but did not see one for the monitors. So who has shipped a system lately and can give me weights for the monitors?
Thanks,
Chef

the 21" inch MP I opened last night weighed in at 90 lbs with box and packing. Materials for packing included balls of industrial pallet wrap and carpet remnants for what that's worth. I just wished the guy had NOT shipped it in the original NeXT box. ARRRRRGH!
Freight is the way to go with more than 1 of those.
so...nice lot of NeXT stuff eh? do tell!

Thanks for the info on the weight for the 21in monitor, it helps a lot.
Not exactly sure what I have found yet, as I am still waiting for a complete inventory. From first conversations it appears to be more than 30 complete systems, some with printers even. Gonna be a good chunk of change for freight, but should be a nice haul of stuff.

I would be open to a coop of sorts. My interest is in accessories, upgrades, and oddities. I have enough main black hardware to kill a camel already. Well, maybe a small camel. in any case, keep us posted because a pallet of NeXT gear is the stuff of lore. Thanks!
I wish you good luck with the lot nextchef. Save it from the dumpsters! :)
Quote from: "da9000"I wish you good luck with the lot nextchef. Save it from the dumpsters! :)
That is the literal truth for this stuff, as it is headed for the dumpster/recycle crushers If someone does not save it. My biggest concern is the monitors, as the weight adds up quick at 60-80 pounds each. Even using freight, the price per monitor to ship it may be more than they are worth, and it may complicate the deal if I try not to take them.
On the positive side, I would certainly have enough monitors to setup that cube with 4 motherboards setup discussed in the other thread.
Its only money I guess ... can always print more ;)

Hahaha, can I send you some printer paper and ink? :)
The monitors are indeed the heavy ones... and I understand what you mean about complicating the deal. When these guys want it gone, they mean everything including the dust on them!
How far from you is this lot? I guess you can't make a trip out of it, can ya?

Far enough that the mileage charge for even a small rental truck, plus lodging and gas, would be the same if not more than the freight. As much as I would love to get some 21in megapixel NeXT displays, I hope most of them are the smaller variety.
Chef
The monitor for my Personal Iris is almost identical to the NeXT 21".
It only cost me $70 to ship from ontario to british columbia.
Turbo Color for me, please. For some odd reason, I've lost contact with the guy who I tried to buy one from.
EDIT: Never mind, it turns out he's in Amsterdam.
wow! Nice chef!
I want a turbo color, NeXT CD drive, external hdd, and a printer

Spare me a cube with an MO drive in any condition, one cartridge, the board and a keyboard and mouse and there will be one very happy 17 year-old on the forums.

I have got some more info, and it appears the bulk of the systems are color slabs, with a few mono's thrown in for good measure. Do not know if any are turbos right now. No confirmed cubes yet :( , but I still hold out hope as they dig through the stuff in storage.

Yea, and that is one monitor at about 70lbs. Now try to imaging 30 of them, which is over 2000 pounds, allmost a ton just in the monitors. Even at an good freight price, it still may be more to ship them than they are worth.

Hi Chef,
Negotiate with him.
He'll be a lot more receptive if you emphasize it's to his benefit to have you take ANY part of it. Perhaps even make his job easier and find him a local rare metals recycler for the CRT's.
I hate to say it but CRT moniotrs are scrap. They are not worth shipping especially for color slabs that can use more modern LCD displays. Those NeXT monitors need to either be ditched (ouch) or found local homes.
I'm positive something can be worked out to save those CPUs from the heap.
The monitors are 17in color displays, except for four that are mono. Does anyone have a weight on the 17in display, or is it even worth the trouble to try and get them at all, as urquidez said.
Chef
yeah if u must get the crt's get only the mono monitors and not the color. let us know what happens

I figured I would grab the mono ones, as those are useful on cubes, but the color ones are just dead weight. If someone in here really wants a 17in color, I may be able to work out something.

At least enough kb/mice/soundboxes to cover each system, but I do not know about any extras. I will probably have to see what I end up after it all arrives, assuming I actually can get this arranged.
Chef
:( Darn, I continue on the search for the elusive cube.
In that case I might go for a color slab with kb, mouse, sound box and the necessary cables.
Ask about removing the NeXT logos from the front of the monitors. If I manage to go LCD I am planning to paint the plactic components black and slap a NeXT logo on the front. Just to give it that NeXT feel. :D
Come on guys! The monitors are useful too! They've got the tiny NeXT logo's on them, and many won't be scratched up and can be reused on the machines with scratched up ones :)))))
But seriously now: methods for nextchef to get this stuff:
Have you thought of a moving company? Sometimes a cross-country move won't be more than $2k (not sure what your estimates of shipping are going to be)
I recall when some friends moved from the Chi-town to the west, they rented a truck and it cost them about $1600 I believe for 2100 miles. What state or city are these things located in btw?

Moving the monitors is going to cost a grand by freight, or $40 each at 60lbs, which is way more than they are worth. If someone has a 17in color, can they please put it on a scale and see if my weight estimate is right? The units have also been in storage, so apparently some are pretty scratched up as well.
Chef
Yeah, that's a lot of money. It'll be only worth it if you can combine the cost for also shipping the machines (so rental truck or moving company). Can you say which state they're in?
BTW, since you're tallying up all the weight, keep track of them so we can have a complete list of the weights of all these. Unfortunately I don't have any color monitors to give you any useful numbers :(

I have a 17" color at home. i'll throw it on a scale when I get there, unless someone replies first.
Is there a prize?!

That is just for the monitors, the systems and rest of the stuff is separate. Luckily a slab with K/M/Sb is only about 14lbs, so the freight is a lot "better" for them, but still a good chunk of change.
I have looked at every different way of doing this that I can think of, including renting truck/van and driving both ways, flying and renting to drive back, multiple trips in a smaller vehicle, and a few other crazy ones. Freight ends up being the cheapest, especially with the price of gas the way it is right now.

OK. I've weighed the 17" color display and it's a fatty at 50 lbs. Because I was curious, I also weighed the 17" mono display and it's at 35 lbs.

Thanks for the info, as that is 30lbs less for the 17 than was estimated, which cuts the total weight down by 40% or so. Will have to recalculate and requote the freight to see what that changes.
Lookin better and better :D

Was the mono a n4000 or a n4000A, as from another thread it appears the n4000 is a lot heavier.

The 17" I weighed is an N4000A.
Looks like the planets have aligned, and I will be getting my "skid o' NeXT" stuff after all. It is on the pallet waiting for pickup next week by the freight company. Apparently they also had a bunch of manuals and software (mathematica, lotus, wordperfect) to throw in as well.
Very excited, as my birthday is next month, so this will be a great present to dig through the boxes and see what treasures await. :D :D :D :D :D
And for those that are curious, I did not get the color monitors, as the freight was just too much. :(
Chef
Well happy B-day! :D
That IS a great present for yourself. Are you gonna post pics when it all comes in?
Nice score Chef!
Once you get over the thrill of having a pile o' NeXT in your home, I'd be interested in helping to defray the expense by taking one of the color turbo slabs off your hands.
It would be nice to have a color system to go with my turbo cube!
James
wow, nice! In a few months I'll score another NeXT from someone and start beefing it up. I think I'll go for a Cube this time. Get as much software and hardware accessories as possible :)
Could you help a /b/rotha' (inside joke) out?
I joined the cube ranks this weekend after placing an order for a bare 040 cube. :D .....but no peripherials. :(
can you spare a soundbox cable as well as a matching keyboard, mouse and soundbox? No need for a mono monitor (I hope). I'm trying to get a dimension board off a fellow member.
Notice how everyone is sucking up now?
haha, yeah..

That is definitely in the works, so everyone who might want one be thinking about it. They are mainly Color and ColorTurbo stations, but will be complete with soundbox, cables, keyboard, and mouse (unless you do not want them). They will be loaded with NS 3.3, but an upgrade to OS4.2 can probably be arranged for those who would like  .
Hopefully I can throw a few up on ebay in order to defray a good amount of the cost, as for the rest, I am open to other offers by PM for those in here who are interested.
Chef
oh boy, I want a turbo color! :P
PM sent.
I need parts for my cube.
The stuff is here .. :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
It appears to be 25-30 systems, most color turbos with ADB soundbox/KB/Mouse. I am not 100% sure yet if they are all turbos, as I have not gotten to the systems yet. I just finished sorting through all the cables, keyboards, soundboxes, mice, software and manuals, and that alone filled 6 copy paper boxes and two longer boxes for the keyboards. Looks like NS versions from 3.0 to 3.3 are all represented, along with a copy of WriteNow and WordPerfect as well. On the docs side, at least one complete developers manual set, along with a bunch of setup and getting started manuals. Some laser printers, four I think judging from the number of printer cables I have, but I can only see 2 from the outside of the skid. I will start breaking down the rest of the skid tomorrow so I can inventory all the systems and see what I actually have.
Chef
you are one lucky sumbitch ;P
dont sell it all :P SLOOOWLY sell bits of the stuff.
What is the difference between ADB stuff & the non-ADB stuff?
Are they interchangeable, i.e., would non ADB stuff work on a system that originally came with ADB stuff?

Well see how lucky I am, as I spent way to much money on this. most of it in freight. Lets just say I could have snagged a dual headed cube setup off of ebay for what I ended up spending on this.
I did not buy it as an investment, but I do at least hope to cover the shipping costs.
So who needs an ADB soundbox or two, or twenty ;)
I will open up a new thread in the marketplace once I get an idea of what I have available.

My impression is that an ADB capable system can use non-ADB peripherals, but not the other way around. Others can chime in, but I think you need a turbo system, or non turbo with a turbo capable rom version in order to use ADB stuff.
