Title: speakin of monitors

Should I leave my 17" color display plugged in? Currently, I'm currently disconnecting it's power cable after using it. (Same with all my black hardware, actually.) So when I plug it in (the monitor) I hear the components charging up and then the reverse when I pull the plug. I can't help but wonder if this repeated activity is healthy for the lifespan. On the other hand leaving the power applied results in lots of heat generated even while powered off, which also sounds unhealthy. So, I chose to go w/ the "less heat = good" formula.

Does anyone have any insight on my paranoia with power and black hardware?

thanks

If you just want to keep them on, turn the brightness and the contrast down.
It helps keep the tube from dimming and the lower voltages needed when contrast and brightness are low takes stress off the electrical components.
Can you not just press the power button on he monitor?
My SGI monitor has the same body design. Did NeXT not install the fan in the monitor like SGI did?

Ha! I found my power button ;)

It's flush with the case in off and on positions and I feel a little foolish.

I think I'll still be unplugging though, I've blown through countless routers and 2 cable modems since I've moved in. I'd hate to lose any NeXT gear on something stupid like a surge. Maybe I'm just crazy.

Also, I detect no fan as part of the display. Can't say I've seen a CRT with a fan before.

K thanks

@urquidez:

I too am paranoid about surges and "electronically switched" devices, so I always take power plugs out of ATX power supplies etc. The problem is that it's a double edged knife:

1) You leave the plug in, and power runs through the circuits even if the main circuits are off. This will cause (theoretically) some small amount of wear and tear and the possibility of a surge could be fatal.

2) You take the plug out, so none of the above problems, but the cooling and heating cycles will also cause wear and tear on the equipment.

So what do you do? I'm unfortunately no expert in these subjects, so I go for 2) because I *assume* that the heating/cooling cycles are less pronounced and cause less wear and tear. Then again, I don't live in the desert, so it shouldn't be so bad in a house...

As for monitors with fans: many of the older workstation (read: expensive) monitors had fans, because back then they cost $5K+ each, and they got really hot too, so the manufacturers installed low RPM fans on them. Last one I had was an IIyama 20-21" with BNC inputs. The fan on that had gone awry and was too noisy, plus it pushed out air that smelled of burnt electronics. I showed it the door (actually left it for someone else to pick up and play with).

Hi;
The fan in the 21 inch NeXT monitor has a fan in it.. or at least the one I had did.

I always thought the 21 inch monitor was silly.. same resolution as the 17 inch, just bigger picture. (on NeXTStation.)

I have one. I'm just paranoid in that room. I go through routers like candy. During thunderstorms I unplug everything...sometimes even the cable modem coax.

In all actuality, Surge Protectors offer very little protection if the surge is big enough. I've seen 80 dollar surge protectors let a bolt of lightning go through.

A battery backup is your best bet. The battery will blow up before anything else gets through. I've had a PC saved by one. The battery literally blew but the computer didnt get fried.

I trust in this logic. I think my black gear is worth the extra cash to protect. Thank you.

@da9000

I do the same until I get a solid UPS. I pull the plug every time. Your considerations are mine exactly. It's a double edged sword to be sure. But I agree that the heating up and cooling cycling from unplugging is the lesser of two evils.

Thanks for letting me know I'm not that wacky about the little things.

Hehehe, no problem. Two wackos in this world! :D

But yeah, the UPS route is the best by all means. I can see how a crappy surge protector might not do much when there's a lot of charge... yet I'm still curious how helf's UPS battery blew up!?

ok, well, "blew up" is the wrong wording. It didn't have an explosion, per se... but the battery expanded and blistered all over and one side had a black, charred hole in and it burned through the side of the UPS.

So it took a hefty bit of electricity.

*edit*

wow, cant spell or type today.

OK... that sounds more like it :D  I'd imagine one of those UPSs (here I'm thinking of a SmartUPS 2000) blowing up would take half the room with it...

bad news for the room...but the NeXT hardware can take the blast.
