So, let me get this right...  Putting up posters of mayonaise is racially offensive?

People really need to get over themselves.

Even if we work on the assumption that mayonaise is offensive (which I wouldn't have imagined in my wildest dreams), what ever happened to "sticks and stones may break my bones..."?

On a side note, there's a show on NPR on the weekends called "What do you know?" where they have a segment called "Thanks for the memos" and they read company memos like this one on the air.  They'd probably get a kick out of that little jewel there...

"Political Correctness"

And fear of being sued.

Apparently. :P

"Political Correctness" will be the undoing of the USA and a few other "developed" countries if people do not wise up.  Everyone needs to spend some time in a free for all IRC chatroom in order to get some thicker skin.

On a more serious note, be very careful with this helf, as I have seen people terminated for things even more silly than this.  Unemployment can put a hurtin on your NeXT collecting ;)

Mayo...racism...I just don't see the connection. I definitely needed a laugh today, of all days (don't even ask. As the school psychologist says: "blissful ignorance").

Thats hilarious !
I'm Hispanic and I cant see how thats racist. Maybe a stretch to call it offensive to Mexicans, except for the fact that it not even a real holiday in Mexico. (well maybe in puebla)

would you get in trouble for displaying the write up on your wall?

I would not suggest it.  The last thing you want to do is point out the idiocy of those in charge who gave you this.  Where I work, that would be deemed insubordination, and grounds for immediate termination.  Never mess with HR, at least without talking to your lawyer first.

Trust me on this one  :(

Is it really that bad? You people should get unionized and claim your rights. If they'd tried to pull a stunt like that in Sweden they would get taken to court and be fined and forced to rehire you and possibly pay damages as well.

Post by: Thrax on May 13, 2007, 10:35:36 AM
I noticed your write-up includes your SSN as an ID number.  Does your juristiction have laws to help cut down Identity theft/credit fraud?  Even if they don't its good company practice to assign a new employee number not based on your SSN for your protection.  After all the more paperwork with your SSN lying around means more chances for it to fall into the wrong hands.

Also do you have any French relatives?  You could turn it around and say you find cinco de mayo offensive as (if memory serves) it is a celebration of a battle over France.  :)

lol, I actually might have french relatives. I'd have to check on that ;P

yeah, I thought the SSN crap was stupid. We do get new 'numbers' but its our SSN with the first 3 digits changed to 999....

It would be *awesome* to see someone getting back at them with something like this and winning a "deeply regretful" apology from them or something :)
