Hi.
First timer here. looking for help resurrecting a Cube and maybe some slabs.

I'm a volunteer at FreeGeek, a non-profit technology
reuse/recycling organization in Portland, Oregon, USA.  I work mostly
on refurbishing Macs (G3 iMac and later).   FreeGeek has
a loosely organized museum that they are trying to get less loosely
organized, and I have been asked to look at the Next hardware,  to
see if I can get it working.  I'm looking for any help/info I can get, starting
with take-apart so that I can document configurations.

comp.sys.next.*  seem to be pretty much dormant.  comp.sys.next.announce
is gone.  What other good souces of info are there, if any?

Why welcome!
My recommendation is that you check the marketplace here often.
The average cube will sell for $150+ (depending on what's included) and the average non-turbo slab might go for $75+ (depending on what's included).

Also check ebay too, their prices can be higher (because everyone wants a NeXT) but their kits are sometimes complete.

A last measure you can do is look through google for forums that mention recent NeXT modding. I know somebody who stripped a NeXT so he could fit a pc inside ( ) and he didn't throw the parts out. If I lived in the US he would of given me the parts for the price of shipping.

Thanks.  I already have the hardware, I'm just trying to figure out what to do
to bring them to life.

Mos tlikely You will have to look out here for any information about

- SCSI configuration of hard drives
- boot parameters
- alternative displays

There are lots of informations about these topics around here, in fact the best ones I found so far. In case You shouldn't find what You are looking for just ask (but not for illegal copies of OS software!). There will always be someone who can give You hints.

Welcome to this nicest place I've found within the last years!

Well, I've resurrected a few myself, so I'll see what I can do. What do and don't you have, and what sort of hardware is it? Mono stuff will be a little stickier than Color just due to the monitors. Also, if you don't have a copy of the OS, you'll likely need that.

Many thanks, people.  I'll do more searches here for specific things.  A World

Welcome Tony.

A few links to get you started:

http://www.nextstuff.info
http://www.channelu.com/NeXT
http://www.blackcube.org
http://www.shawcomputing.net

and of course these forums and its file section:
http://www.nextcomputers.org/NeXTfiles

Also, find the NeXT FAQ (copies in channelu and other places) which can be very very helpful.

I highly recommend using the search feature of these forums as you'll find a lot of invaluable information. Unfortunately the search feature of most forum software sucks donkey balls, so you'll have to learn to trick it to find the topics you want. At least there's a decent breakdown of subforums, so for most of the stuff you want you'll find it under the Black Hardware, and NeXTSTEP (vs White/Intel hardware, Virtualization, etc)

Cheers
