A lot of questions,

NeXT Computer, Inc. -> NeXT Black Hardware

Hi there,

I run a blog at www.abandonshack.com, I specialize in interesting things to do with old hardware. I'm writing an article about surviving 30 days with nothing but old hardware.  I finally had a reason to pick up my favorite piece of computer wierd-belia, and today I picked up a mono turboslab, crt, and original KB and mouse.

You know the core specs, so I guess the relevent info is...
I'm running nextstep 3.2, have a 1.2g HD, and 72mb ram.

Here is where I need the help.

1. I run a wired/wireless router that serves all my pc's with an I net connection.  I have absolutley no idea how to connect the next machine to the internet, could someone point out an easy-ish way to do so?  Also, the machine did not come with a browser, where do I get one? How do I get it on the next machine to begin with?

2. How do I update the os to 3.3, or openstep? google really has let me down here, the internet is nearly barren of next resources.

Thats all for now, I really am looking forward to shutting down all the pc's in the house and trying to rough it next only.

Thanks so much,
Patrick

Well, strike most of that, thanks to you good folks, and some poking around, I found most of what i needed, I'm also now able to telnet and ftp into my next box from my ubuntu box.

Some q's though, I d/led omniweb for 68k from the ftp repository here, but when I try to run it, the icon just zooms into the lower left hand corner, and nothing happens. Do I have to somehow "install" it for lack of a better word, or will it just not run on 3.2?

Secondly.  installing 3.3 would be nice, is there a way to simply upgrade 3.2, or will I need to totally reinstall the os, and, in either case, where in the heck do I get  either the full 3.3 os or the update for 3.2->3.3?

Any help rocks.

Thanks again guys,
Patrick

Which version of omniweb? v2.5 i think is the last that works with NS3.x, the newer versions require openstep 4.2

Hi helf, thanks for the response.

I've got the right version, I also tried SpiderWoman.app, both do the same thing.

I'm sure I'm missing a step here, I unzipped them on my ubuntu computer, and then just transferd the whole SpiderWoman.app folder into my apps dir on my next with ftp.  Is there a make or ./ or some other command I need to run BEFORE I can use the browser? I tried simply  ./ from inside the SpiderWoman.app folder as root and got permission denied. I know oh so very little about unix.

Thanks
Patrick

aaah. thats why. when you unzip it on your ubuntu machine, you are destroying all the permissions and such.

copy the actual .zip or what not onto your NeXT and decompress it ON the NeXT. they should launch properly then

Are they actual .zip files or are they gzip files? if they are gzips, then just do, from the command line, "gzip -d <name of file>.gz"

Quote from: "nextse7en"filename is OmniWeb.2.7.b3.H.b.tar.gz

I'm not sure thats the right file for 68k NeXT machines... but, to decompress that, do this. (from the command line)

1. cd to the dir the file is in
2. type "gzip -d OmniWeb.2.7.b3.H.b.tar.gz" (no quotes)
3. now it should have a "OmniWeb.2.7.b3.H.b.tar" file in that directory.
4. type in "tar -xf OmniWeb.2.7.b3.H.b.tar"

it will take it a second to detar the file. when it is done, it'll just put up a blank prompt again. go back to the workspace window and go to the folder that you had copied omniweb to and you should have a OmniWeb.app showing. and it should launch.

Well, I found an ftp archive.  What should I be looking for in the filename to ensure that is for 68k? I'm seeing a lot of quilifiers, like NIHS, N, I, and so on, any ideas?

NIHS is:

N= NeXT(68k)
I = Intel
H = HP PA-RISC
S = SPARC

So anything thats NIHS, just N, or has N in it should work. also, if it has a .s.tar or something similiar, that usually means it has or is the source code for the program, which means you could just compile it.

ungzipped, and untared, and now it shows as an app, but failes silently.... The icon zooms into the lower left and dissapears, and I have no further options.

Could it be that 2.6 is to high a version for nextstep3.2? If so, how do I update from 3.2 to 3.3?

Hi nextse7en,

You'll need to apply the Foundation User Patch in order to get OmniWeb 2.x running on NEXTSTEP 3.2.
You can find the patch here:

ftp://ftp.peak.org/pub/next-ftp/next/apps/utils/patches/FoundationUserPatch.tar.gz

Be sure to back up any important data before applying the patch.  OmniWeb should run fine after that.

That's a cool idea for a blog!! Makes for a much more interesting reading!

I see the other guys have helped you getting the browser up and running, so only a couple small comments:

I also couldn't get SpiderWoman running, but I didn't look much into it (NS3.3)

Also when you want to run an app from the Terminal/console, you just go inside the .app folder and the executable will be in there. Usually doing a sorted listing (ls -lS) and looking for the biggest file in there will do the trick. Also, most executables will have the same name as the parent folder.

Good luck!
