Nice to see his work getting featured here, and lets try and drive some traffic to his youtube channel! Thom is doing great work with his FujiNet (
https://fujinet.online/) project for the retrocomputer space.
He can be found on the twitters at @tschak for those interested, as I am not sure if he is a member here.
Really cool. I spend some time last year playing with DoomEd on GNUstep (thanks to the amazing port by Josh Freeman (
http://twilightedge.com/mac/redoomed/)).
Years and years ago I played with a DoomEditor, probably called DoomEd also and created, if memory serves me, 2 levels. It's quite a challenge under a DOS editor with getting textures to line up, buttons to work properly. I hardly remember any of it any more but at the time it was a real hoot. I suppose I'm going to have to give this a go at some time before my clock runs out.....imagine level editing at age 73, that would be me.
I can see in the first 25 or so minutes of this video that this editor is much more sophisticated than the one I used. My editor was probably one of the very earliest on a DOS system and most things were done manually, including calculating offsets for wall textures etc.
This is a very nice system, wish I had it bitd.

That would be a lot of fun to create new levels for doom. I may have to try it myself sometime, maybe a NeXT-themed level. I understand that John Romero will be releasing SIGIL II, an unofficial sixth episode for DOOM for the 30th anniversary of the game. Let us know how it goes if you decide to give it a try.

Creating levels is fun but first I have to figure out how to get my Doom and the Editor on my machine. Doom is there but I probably have to put the Doom.wad on the machine for it to run. Then there is the editor itself. It's not on there yet. I'm not very conversant in linux based machines so I suppose it's an opportunity to learn because it would be fun to make a few levels and share them around the NeXT community.
Hello NeXT Community: I sense a tremor in the NeXT community force lol I for one, think this may Doom may be modded , I like the idea of a NeXT themed version of doom..... with NeXT hardware and the Aliens modified to be Windows 3.11 and Dos Billy Beast's
The source code for the binary space partitioner we used for DOOM is now available at ftp.uwp.edu: /incoming/id/doombsp.zip.
The catch is that the source has a few objective-c constructs in it, so it will take some work to port to dos. The only thing that will be a hassle is replacing the collection objects, the majority is just straight C.
This code was written and extended, not evolved, so it probably isn't the cleanest thing in the world. Please, PLEASE, PLEASE do not ask for support on this. I have far too much occupying my time as it is.
Our map editor does NOT work on wad files. It saves an ascii text representation of the file, then launches doombsp to process that into a wad file. I have included the input and output for E1M1, so you can verify any porting work you perform.
Having two programs allowed us to seperate the tasks well under NEXTSTEP, but people working on dos editors will probably want to integrate a version of the bsp code directly into the editor.
If you are creating new DOOM maps for other people to use, we would apreciate it if the wadfiles you create use a PWAD identifier at the start of the file instead of the normal IWAD. This causes DOOM to tell the user that they are playing a modified version, and no technical support will be given.
If you are creating a map editor for distribution to other people, contact Jay WIlbur (jayw@idsoftware.com) about getting a license agreement for the use of our trademark, etc. Its not a money issue, just some legal jazz.
BTW, there IS a bug in here that can cause up to a four pixel wide column to be drawn out of order, causing a more distant floor and ceiling plane to stream farther forward than it should. You can sometimes see this on E1M1 looking towards the imp up on the ledge at the entrance to the zig zag room. A few pixel wide column of slime streams down to the right of the walkway. It takes a bit of fidgeting with the mouse to find the spot. If someone out there tracks it down, let me know...
Have fun!

Hello NeXT Community: The DOOM Ed video helps !
I'm looking at the grid from the top lol and knowing autocad forwards , backwards and upside down but it has been awhile. I would have had a field day creating Doom stuff maybe still will....
In Autocad you create a drawing , set the scale and grid
You have layers , you can switch on and off which is handy for complicated drawings .
You can then create reusable objects , for example the Masters level cad
course. We first created a standard dorm room.
We created the dorm room foot print, a simple first floor layout with space for a community hallway , communal bathroom, stairs at each end of the centered hallway etc.
Autocad let's you easily add attributes to each object like materials and cost and suppliers, how to construct, even contacts ,subcontractors, blue print, part numbers , labor , permit status, even code requirements etc, inspector scheduling....
A simple design for the apartment / dorm / building / house . business
So for the Dorm project with in each room we're desks, doors, kitchen , bathroom fixtures sometimes community or jack and jill ,you would create with a step by step tutorial.
So X * Y dimensions start with a 12' by 20' room, drawing scale 1" = 1 foot Floor and ceiling
and 2 by 4 by 10 studs although 2 by 6 are better for insulation, sound proofing, wiring for 2 walls
To keep it simple wall 3 windows at one end , with forced air or electric heater
Wall 4 Entry way at other a square box with closets on either side
obviously dry wall
and elevation 10' Ceilings bla bla bla light , fan, ceiling tile. flooring , paint
Once you had your 3 d dorm room box template , you copy it flip it or inverse it and wam you now have 2 rooms to scale Auto Cad was just starting up in 1992....
So boom boom , you have "lego" rooms , different styles , 2 rooms side by side , merge copy then cluster of 4 to 8 to 16 to 32 , a complete floor merge copy paste , set the elevation for the NeXT level , set your floor joists beams etc HVAC, plumbing , drop in entire 2nd, 3rd , 4th floor etc up to a sky scraper lol..... the engineers calc everything to take it from a conceptul drawing to adding in elements to create structural integrity according to code,
Obviously you really start with a soils test , engineered foundation , do you want a cellar or functional basement , water heater, furnace. etc are utilities and infrastructure in place and up to code and approved , parking , landscaping
Then I had the final graduate level autocard project, well I decided I would create a 3d Airport to scale and actually submitted it to at the time Perez Architects as they we're designing the Denver international Airport. As my dad was senior ranking LCA flying for United at the time and my experience of a lot of global travel with the family, made it fun getting his opinion of the best ideas from airports around the country and world to incorporate into the Denver International Airport of the future.
Perez just sent me a nice letter lol and a lot of the concepts I had , we're actually used in the design of Denver International Airport. I thought I was going into cad designing autocad architectural everything for sure but fate took an interesting turn you see.
I've been looking for some payback thinking lol and man o man Doom Battle at DIA how epic it would be is an understatement of what I'm collaboratively thinking.
The Doom game almost writes itself as there are rumors of a DIA underground alien base and tunnels with secret government facilities. The Blue horse of doom lol .... It would be a hilarious app , especially when stranded at the airport , I can almost hear the shouts of joy and laughter of this augmented virtual reality concept as you approach the frisky TSA agents lol imagine a pallet of virtual tools and devices as a special gift for them removing my stinky shoes .
Oh my.... also a tamed down version like the Pokemon for the younger set line waiters.
Entertainment for those long lines, perhaps Apple Vision Pro gains traction as a rental at airports as characters appear to summon your multilingual virtual guide for example to lead you through an Airport, tourist sites, theme parks. Hologram displays as well.
AI is on it , perhaps launches a time clock , knows it is you and checks you past TSA ,issues your boarding pass giving interactive alerts about departure time, set up your baggage check in streamlining all of it.
It also tells you where your bags are through integrated Airtag tracking and if the baggage handlers are rough as in dash cam bag video, perhaps connects you directly, to them the supervisor and takes a photo of the perpetrator, GPS time stamp correlated with employees gps, it is obvious , boston dynamics robot and package luggage handlers are on the horizon ........ I'm from the future at this point lol.
So The twist of fate well I'm still doing this NeXT stuff 31 years later lol yep in fact very first job I interviewed for after graduating CSU in December of 1992. I interviewed and was hired to sell NeXT software and Computers by the man ,Jim Pratt that taught my dad how to fly back in the 50's . His son Dale moved over from Businessland and a group of us set up Alembic Systems International in the Denver Tech Center selling NeXT Computers which I had never even heard of they liked my Cobol and Autocad programing experience as well.
So all the proposed automation is all good until a power failure and software crash , so makes sense when an epic cluster F#$#'s rears its ugly head to have a plan B and C manual.
Plan C , ha the shit storm we currently experience at airports....
Historically the futuristic bulk of the automated baggage handling system at DIA still gathers dust , poorly executed design , seriously they wanted it to all run on Windows and I think / know a NeXTSTEP mission critical object oriented scalable database baggage management system with cad cam interface would have probably resolved most of the software issues , with AI and technology now it would probably be doable look at Amazon warehouses.
A rectangular starter box with an easy to use step by step how to video to build on also needed as we are flying blind and the above video , is cool but has my head spinning.
You simply launch the boom boom doom room aka maze creator.
Make it easy to add stuff , obviously vintage NeXT hardware is cool
so we extend an olive branch to the Amiga and Retro Mac community for example and the Linux Guys
.... Fill the room so to speak with the wizards of getting shit done lol armed there epic coding software skills and time on their hands to blow of steam on this stuff. Textures, tools, 3d models or rendered 3d photos of vintage hardware perhaps a databaseof these grows to include arcade and gaming consoles that you can interact with eventually may be it is a real system somewhere:) Attach repair and troubleshooting docs , this is going to be bad ass after all.
As time passes and it Doom Room grows, branches , flourishes... it evolves for the future generations to awe all things retro , we want them to join.
I think it would be fun to walk with your avatar into a future WEB 3d virtual arcade and find your game of choice and have it pop up into your browser, you can use it , pick your games , a lot of games out there already and my guess is this is huge a billion dollar idea but free for everyone is a whole lot more fun , the catch is they have contribute something may be it is a like, a displike, advice, emoji or actual work , donations to it, it is an untamed beast .....
it lets you create a custom virtual arcade of your own, your own game and you can compete with your friends and strangers and win bling for your avatar may be real bling lol might as well bring in music, video, education and libraries.... a true Black Hole
Kids these days, ha they are so smart running circles around us on their phones.
My assistant Tom is a retired school teacher , he incorporated the phones into the curriculum said it was the best way to find common ground.
Perhaps our doom room educational gaming monster grows , The homework they finish perhaps AI tailors it to the level and students interest in subjects, rewarding accordingly..... you want to create spark and they have a choice of motivational rewards for people learning successfully , may be it grows as not all students are motivated to learn. When I heard that reading is now an elective in some states and they are removing books from libraries it is troubling to me personally. Having done business with several hundred universities , Colleges and Schools and I actually worked in several libraries and was that lazy student at one time lol..... how does all of this relate back to doom . Well the future is probably doomed if the basic fundamentals or foundation of learning continue to be abandoned , we will be able to change history.
Pivoting to what people use makes sense....
We will help build up from there, rather than jumping into the middle of it all. So with in this room , I envision as the WEB was also started on NeXT a 3d web page interface so you would be able to play it in the browser , Free , walking into an amazing 3d browser world WEB 4.0 .
About the Architecture stuff in my past , here is the Black Hole in Denver. When I started the house was a semi run down neighborhood eyesore lol in the heart of the Denver tech Center and my friends in construction and I with designs turned it into this over 7 years and she stands strong 20 years later.
https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/8501-E-Grand-Ave-Denver-CO-80237/13427109_zpid/ As fate would have it I moved back to Fort Collins for love in 2003 of many women, wound up finding the bat shit crazy ones and in the end, I am coming out ahead. The crazy roommates are finally gone and as I look at some of my friends mired in relationship turmoil life is good. The house I moved into here is always a work in progress at one point it was abandoned , Black hole and NeXT remains strong and my health is improving no longer darkness and doom and gloom lol . Happy Holidays !
A few of the NeXT 3rd party products I was trained on by the original NeXT software developers ZZ Volume , a very cool Cad package for NeXT and one of its features was the ability to create 3d spiral stair cases, Autocad at the time was not able to do this. Compose in Color by Oliver Untertaker which morphed into Animo. So I would up doing business with Warner Brothers, Dreamworks , Disney Animation / Pixar and Saturday Night Live among others :)
So the key is what is old Doom capable of? we shall see.
So for me there is a serious learning curve at first blush ,
I understand the basic concept of how it works and I'm trying to get a handle on how it all fits together so a simple flow chart would help
What does what in Doom software,
what is needed is a beginner guide ,
how the heck am I just finding out about this Doom Source .
OMG, I was looking for something to do in my recent 3 month's stay in the hospital for MRSA and developing a custom Doom Game would have been perfect for me .
It is not to late as despite all odds I'm still alive and have an upcoming hip replacement .
Can I do any of the work on an Ipad ?
Can Previous be ported to an Ipad or displayed and accessed from a remote Mac host, touch screen NeXTstep would be awesome?
Can a touch screen shell (?) be dropped in as a front end module on top of previous?
For existing drawings aka autocad or other DXF files ,I want the whole enchilada, textures , blue prints , with site plans and attributes and even 3d fly through video be merged with the Doom 3d gaming engine.
I would guess it is to some extent ... Doom Maps are modifiable , it looks like this Doom is the 1st 3d gaming engine.
If you have 3d blue prints iin DXF format, what formats does DOOM support ,
The larger question is down the time line , is the original Doom 3d Game engine laying the foundation for the Universal Matrix lol Skynet and are we living in a simulation.....
My first question is all of the source compatible with Original NeXT 68K Hardware, Previous or both? I'll answer here as I find out.
I'll probably just launch the NeXTSTEP Intel version as well it will speed up rendering.
As I understand the Doom structure man oh man, it seems like they winged created a lot of stuff out of thin air in design but hey it all worked and was /is revolutionary,
I see the potential here to resurrect a lot of the good old NeXT software like Animo and Renderman , the Solid Thining modeler and Z Volume cad apps, Create, Tiffany, etc to use as doom creation tools.....
Apple Vision Pro hmmmm ..... the price needs to come way down for more mainstream acceptance IMHO.
I'm not sure how it all works but is it possible to have a wifi connection to Mac Hardware custom software and perhaps an Apple Vision Pro generic model would be possible as the Display perhaps or via Iphone?
##### In summary and thoughts , no need to answer all this I'm just thinking out load and bored.
I'm not sure what all this Gloom and Doom is leading to but if I can start with simply creating a simple scaled flat rectangular floor template on a doom enabled grid independent of the current game but running on NeXT 68K with access to their tools and textures , it would be a good place to start .
Once there is a beginner room, instructions easy to follow than can be passed on and to everyone with similar interests ie knowledge , users added,
descriptive how to video tutorials seem to work best for me.
I'm know there is a lot of stuff out there on Doom in fact one of my customers wrote a book on Doom and I have dome business with ID software ie Carmack and Romero in the past lol but it has been a minute, times flies:)
$$$$$$ The really big idea to ding the hell out of the Universe because we can:)
So for the NeXT themed Game design, I have a hypothesis:
It would make sense to create a NeXT Community themed template aka Beginner Doom Room Game Designer aka Karate Ed I'm looking at you :)
Quote from: Rob Blessin Black Hole on November 26, 2023, 11:06:39 PMIt would make sense to create a NeXT Community themed template aka Beginner Doom Room Game Designer aka Karate Ed I'm looking at you :)
So Rob, I can see you have some enthusiasm for this. Excellent!!! When I created a couple Doom maps the editor was pretty clunky. The one in the video is exquisite, or would have been in the day.
The way, as far as I know, that anyone (and certainly me) learned to create a level was to create a box with a player start, enemy and some stuff to pick up. It's not fancy but you get many of the elements of building levels by just building a box.
Once you've done that, or at least what I did, was build another room and then connect them. That's where you start seeing problems with building levels as you may have things lined up wrong with your door/hallway with textures for instance.
For me at this time I need to see if I can get the editor to run on my NeXT, not really even sure how to go about that but......once it's on there I'll be able to figure out how to use it and start creating a level or 2.
Of course the first link in your first post was defunct but there are plenty of sources out there for editors, WADs, source code, etc for Doom.
Anyway, I may have some time tomorrow to play with this and figure out how to get the editor to run on my NeXT. Not being linux centric (yet) I'm not really even sure where to start but we'll figure it out and if not, I'll ask questions.
It's been about 30 years since I created those levels so for me it will also be a relearning process but.....I did it once so that knowledge isn't lost, it just needs to be dusted off.
John Romero has some good examples of using the editor in this video.

Edit: He starts building a new level at about the 6:00 minute mark in the video.

This is kind of where I'll have to look at the Doom interface and compare it to a AutoCad interface.
The very first things you set is the scale 1" = 1 foot or you can 1CM or 10CM = 1 M which creates your grid.
Having a Grid is really nice for alignment because it gives you snap to points on and X,Y,Z plane. It looks like doom does this .....
To get things to a align is all about vector coordinates in a 3d space with X and Y representing the floors and ceiling and roof planes and Z representing the walls if that makes sense. So setting X and Y creates your foot print or floor space and think of Z doing the same thing but with in your rectangle wall, you set the size width and height and elevation of windows and doors with in the walls.
I'm not sure yet how doom does the Z (walls and doors axis) this but I'll look at Nitro's link :)
In Auto Cad to create motion you draw a P line , think of it like flying a drone down a hallway , where you set the angle of the camera on your drone to look left and right while in flight.
I'm guessing the way Doom handles it is sets your perspective aligned or set in front of you and it looks like it makes 90 degree shifts on the horizontal plane only of the camera angle probably the best they we're able to do at the time due to limitations in graphics so no looking up or down, rendering , ram and processor speed ..... man oh man would I have been able to help them as I think they may not have understood cad. Looking at half life, they even state 0 experience with game development which probably means not much autocad experience and they we're coming from Microsoft hell but I have to hand it to them they got it done.
So I'm gathering like Autocad where you create a database of objects aka a bank of different style size windows and doors with hinges and doorknobs, by now I'm sure there are millions lol as we actually had to draw them up.
Looks Doom had a graphics side to create the characters king of like an action figure doll , very basic and then to it they added the special effects , my guess is this is a separate object looking at the walk through these beasts appear when the player accomplishes a set of tasks .
I can kind of visualize , how at any given time the player had one weapon available at a time again probably limitations of graphics , ram, processor and bus and as it is using vectors on a horizontal plane in 90 degree locked shifts that makes it easy and it looks like you have a little bit of mobility to move left and right to dodge the incoming bullets lol .
I'm guessing the creatures have there code and it looks like the drop in at the same place with same number of them and characteristics. I see AI will quickly screw game players here lol as it will probably gather statistics on every game player and adapt its tactics as avatars we are doomed. As instead of the same pattern to success now you have to adapt your strategy kind of like playing 3d chess oh my , will AI in effect cheat because it simply knows the motion of our avatar in advance because of predictability and will it actually have sympathy on us , dumbing itself down as it may actually start to enjoy us playing the game .... oh my head hurts.
What I'm saying is if AI can simply look at the code and the characters with in the game and be asked to modify or optimize them for entertaining game play then it gets real interesting quick. AI avatars in a 3d space , will you be able to tell if they are an AI character with in the game or an actual human playing the game and when does that line become blurred.
and then this brings me back to did they even port a joy stick or game controller to NeXT 68K hardware obviously with ADB it makes it easier but how about non adb , it can't just be a peripheral walled garden fo NeXT non adb peripherals , there has to be a way to break through the iron clad NeXT non adb peripheral interface lol and connect alternative keyboards and mice to it lol but how ? Via serial port drivers or DSP perhaps? What about the printer port for example as NeXT Laser printers have non adb emulation chips in them so that means NeXT did design ADB to work with NON adb in later model NeXT hardware , explains why the dual compatible sound box works so they must have left the door open to peripheral support drivers example was ADB .
I think i have it breaking out the video signal from the db 19 connector , obviously
this has got to be cake and Brian proved it here
http://www.asterontech.com/Asterontech/next_adb_conversion.html It looks like the main difference is the way DATA is handled to and from the keyboard via the ADB verse non adb connector to the NeXT ASIC so it is a custom "Asic" in an adaptor that is needed to translate USB or PS/2 signals to the NeXT ASIC peripheral chip
From what I remember Rob, to me it didn't really seem a lot like CAD in it's functionality (I was conversant at one time in AutoCAD 10)....but the CAD knowledge will be useful in that you will 'see' the 3D shape in your mind. Now remember, this is like 30 years ago and so I could be mis-remembering. It was a hobby for me, not a job nor was I in any particular group for creating levels. I did it on my own with a fairly crude level editor.
However, having said that once you created a level it just worked.....IF.....you did everything right with the vertices and such. It's really an interesting process and sometimes difficult that's why a person starts simple with a box and goes from there. There used to be tutorials online for creating a simple box and moving forward with that but now it's probably lost or buried somewhere on the web.....that was created on the NeXT.
The other thing I liked about it were the flags that would be set for certain items that just made them work.....like doors, raising platforms. I had one of these in one of my levels that when a certain line was passed would raise out of a deadly swamp of poison. It was pretty cool. Of course you have to associate triggers with action to make it all work but it's pretty easy as I recall once you get the hang of it.
Anyway, still haven't gotten the time to look at this. I will need a serious block of time and probably more than 1 day to revisit this. Unfortunately I don't have a Win95 machine to run the software on at the moment but I supposed I could partition my wife's old computer and do it there.
If I can find it, I can build it and......they will come, whoever they are......
The Doom on my NeXT computer probably has to have the Doom.wad file to run. Still unsure how I'll get the Doom editor on the machine but that's why I need to block off time to do this. Initially it will be slow but once the grey cells get lubricated I'm sure it will start coming back to me.
Ok, I've copied a Doom.wad and DoomII.wad file to the NeXT but the launcher doesn't seem to recognize them even though they are in the same directory.

Wow it is just this easy , make doom levels in 5 minutes ....

Ok, so you can see from this (did you watch it?) that it's dead easy to create a doom wad file using this editor. I could have used this back in the day, probably saved hundreds of hours of creating those couple of levels with it.
Thanks for the link Rob and now I will start considering something appropriate for the 30th anniversary of Doom and also something NeXTish.....if that's a word.
For those out there in NeXT land that are interested in Doom level making, this is the editor and game engine that you want. I'm slightly familiar with GZdoom through the use of ZDoom when it first came out. It created much better graphics for the original game (much less pixelated) and ran really smooth. Give it a try.....maybe we could collaborate on some levels to see if we could create a truly impressive 32 set themed grouping.
Anything is possible with this setup.
I did a very small cheap and dirty map using this editor. First time I've used it so there is a lot to learn and this is very simplistic, the kind of map a person starts with to get familiar with his tools. That's all this is and to give you an example of what it might look like to start. It will take a while to figure out the things I used to know but it's already starting to percolate to the surface so that's good. This is going to be fun.
Since the file was too large to put on here I've uploaded it to my YouTube channel which is very sloppy but it works.
https://youtu.be/GJgR2pKr-EoThis is the finished (I hope) wad file.
Not my greatest work but I bet most of you die at least once before you get through it. There are no tricks, it's just to show how the editor looks with a very simple map and with me not yet knowing the editor other than at it's very basic level.
I added the .wad file extension to the list of allowed file extensions for attachments, so you should be able to attach .wad files now. Please let me know if there are any issues with this.
A thanks for that, it'll save some time and nonsense.
Here's a link of a short video on making teleports that work well and look nice....

The timelines for Doom and my NeXT experience are getting really cosmically weird for me lol as if I were not crazy enough ...... this page has the earliest versions of DOOM , Alpha 0_2.zip released February 4th, 1993 , I started selling NeXT stuff February 9th, 1993 lol coincidentally the same day NeXT shutdown the hardware production line spooky action at a distance. Ed I'll try it !
https://www.doomworld.com/classicdoom/info/shareware.phpWhich plays perfectly into the NeXT themed story lol the NeXT hardware employee's never saw it coming Doomsday February 9 1993 . The chosen golden BOZO Rob Blessin was some how hired on this very day to sell NeXT products. Whilst a fledgling company ID software was creating the worlds first 3d gaming engine using NeXT hardware to create DOOM .
Nearly 30 years have passed and Rob realizes it must have been a message as he had no clue until now the timeline merger he has been . Fortunately he has remained steadfast in his duties carrying the NeXT torch all these years , preserving the NeXT hardware for the ages and now the creation coming the tribute to Steve Jobs , the NeXT computer addition 30 'th anniversary of Doom and NeXT .
I think scene one ought to be getting hired and the interview process with Steve Jobs asking questions with the last being have you tried LSD lol then stuff gets cray from there as your responses determine what department of NeXT you start with...... now it gets interesting as we need a model of the NeXT offices incoming ,some may actually wind up at the very first Palo Alto office , others at redwood city.... answering the series of questions determines your destiny some wind up in the eye of the storm dropped into the middle of 400 NeXT engineers finding out they are getting laid off now by you lol OMG .
NeXT is planning something secretive the software port to Intel, you survive, this was my first day seriously at Alembic so this is how I saved my ass , here in lies an opportunity , I chimed in as wide spread panic ensued . Angry beasts indeed , banks of NeXT hardware angry Steve lol , you are an engineer dodging the pink slip meanies, office back stabbers, credit takers for your work , bean counters , etc duck and cover , failed prototype and software bug room ought to be epic ..... back to how I saved my ass , some customers are going to be panicking wanting to dump NeXT hardware , so yep you become a NeXT wheeler dealer to get through another level for sure and others panicking because they have standing orders for NeXT hardware that is now obsolete .... a quest of sorts to find NeXT hardware for the USAF and 3 letter agencies, yep this really happened lol and they actually convinced NeXT that summer to do one more run of hardware on the down low. so yes , their will have to be a secret agent level lol this is going to be bad ass .
Then cometh the NeXTSTEP/Openstep Intel Boxes and the Battle against Microsoft and Sun ........ OMG the BLUE SCREEN of DEATH room battling the Microsoft freeze rays , a house of horror filled with DOS, Windows 3.11 , Windows NT, cryptic messages and Microsoft Dev tools .... You must battle these beasts and convert your bank of PC's to NeXTSTEP , tame SUN and HP as well even IBM rears it ugly head for awhile , time rolls on what is this a battle for the World Wide Web muah , fighting the search engines and age restricted websites remember the pornado oh really bad timing in the game of course, junior what in the sam hell are you doing lol .com battles (buying the right ones) oh crap it is Apple failing badly and now the copland developers , the newtons , tams , NeXT prevails and saves the giant Apple , Steve is back ....... the bondi blues and candy imacs , land of the pods, pads and smart phones , battling androids lol ought to be an amazing game ...... oh no battling the internet shoppers and auction snipers really..... interactive news blurbs ,video clues as to what is NeXT am I on to something or what Doom NeXT 30 year legacy :)
What is this , I'm telling you if we can actually import spam messages into a section , you know those ones and pick weapons and do battle
wiping out the spam caught in the spam filter , how fun would that be as it is truly a daily battle and some spam deserves more than a simple delete , I want the full disposal of doom weapons to unleash on spam , especially the messages promising stuff, phishing scams and the ultimate questioning the length of my manhood and the unsubscribe that doesn't work.... I'm pretty sure if a gaming room existed where you could send it your deleted spam for disposal by hundreds, no thousands of spam fighting warriors, gaining points for stuff and experience for avatar bling ,helping you destroy it would be huge ....... we're going to need more servers lol
Perhaps the sinister, Battle of the Ex's virtual showdown oh it is on like Donkey Kong, as well as with or lol against current significant others..... siblings , relatives etc.... it should be fun but who knows ...
Trivia Battler Section Gauntlet Puzzle solvers ....
And finally low and behold the epic battle of the dating app people lol beware the generation Z student phone Zombies with attitude as they are tic toc and instagram influences whilst we old timers are on the uncool keepers of the facebook lol which leads me to the final battle with people like my parents in their late 80's coming at you with tech from Radio Shack and Sears ,dial phones, vinyl and symphony records
The timeline will make it really funny as you advance through the years including argumentative subjects like music, sports, politics, religion and entertainment, I can only imagine what is going to go on in those rooms arrrrrrg let's go , finally a fun palace to take out your frustrations in the comment sections with virtual doom response lol .
It'll be huge especially if it is easy for people to add or create there own little gaming section :) Obviously rate and like emoji sections with comments , it may just snowball , ideally I would like it to be free what would I do with several billion dollars lol but if it winds up hitting big , I'll take it and put it to good use . There is always that last battle and a choice taming the Flying Unicorn in the land of heaven , peace and love and Universal world peace or some may choose hell to whoop up on some demons ,get some .
Who's with me? Build it and they will come. Finally an encore battling the Billionaires which really ought to be fun because they are huge , when you make it all the way there for them to keep in the game battling the growing number of players , they will be able to create really fun areas and get a real hoot out of it, hiding prizes , donations sections to worthy causes of their choice with the idea that a lot of philanthropy comes out of it ,scholarships, internships actual jobs etc , think Mr. Beast , Bezo's , Zuck, Gates, Cook, Ellison, Oprah and Musk etc it is global after all they are going down lol or will they with stand the gauntlet as their areas will also be ranked and rated by the players including themselves .
Apple, Google and AI and of course you and me probably makes a lot of and this happen quick ....... they re always looking for the NeXT big thing may be, just may be it is us that saves the world.
Look at this terrain builder for doom
https://forum.zdoom.org/viewtopic.php?f=232&t=70938It doesn't happen over night You kind of walk into a city like Second life or Simms eventually and choose what you want to do like the movie Ready Player One I suppose. Finally what is this :) the school and homework section , hook line and sinker.
The Editors and Grammar and Punctuater battle clock watchers woop woop battlestations lol ha.
Almost forgot the pet section as my cat will probably want to play as well chirp chirp.
Celebrities will get to do battle against the paparazzi's , huge I tell you:)
Quote from: Rob Blessin Black Hole on November 28, 2023, 01:43:09 AMThe timelines for Doom and my NeXT experience are getting really cosmically weird for me lol as if I were not crazy enough ...... this page has the earliest versions of DOOM , Alpha 0_2.zip released February 4th, 1993 , I started selling NeXT stuff February 9th, 1993 lol coincidentally the same day NeXT shutdown the hardware production line spooky action at a distance. Ed I'll try it !

Yes, I think you'll have some fun with this Rob. Check out those videos first and save yourself a lot of time. Go through them with your editor open so you can follow along and you'll see just how easy it is. You'll have to pause his video because you won't be as fast as he is at first but I'm sure you'll do fine.
I would start with the basic room building one first, they aren't in order so then I would do the outdoor one next and doesn't matter in which order you do the ones after that.
That terrain editor is crazy man. Wow, haven't seen anything for Doom before this like that. I will definitely check it out....well, you've put a lot on my plate now my friend.
That's a crazy long description of what you would like and I think that's a monumental task as written. It would require someone that can alter the creatures within Doom through scripting (that's not me). It would also require dreaming up some way to 'hold conversations' within Doom and I'm really not sure how that would be done but triggers could probably be used to make that happen.....that again would require coding within the game and that's not my area of ability, well, at least not at this time. That would require a lot of effort for me there when I need to learn this editor and make things function smoothly and gracefully throughout any level created.
I'm not saying that I couldn't learn it but it certainly won't be 'instant gratification'. I think there are others on here that would be far more capable in the coding aspect to create what we would be looking for to achieve 'your dream levels' here Rob. I can see this being a 32 level group of levels as in the commercial releases of Doom. Also, there's no money in creating these unless you go on to become a star within an organization of folks that their levels are so good people are willing to pay for them but I also think there are copywrite issues, at least the purchase of a license to use the Doom(II) engine for such a game as you've envisioned.
Though it's an aggressive thought, I like it. I can guarantee I alone would not be able to achieve this, it would need a team for sure with clearly defined functions to be efficient in creating something like this and of course there has to be the will for people to want to do this.
This is the point where we ask 'who out there is willing and in fact eager to be part of a team to try to create Rob's dream level(s)?'
Anyway, that's enough for now....I'm going to continue learning this editor, using the aforementioned tutorials to get me going and for now that will be enough work to get my poor old brain thinking along these lines again. Did I mention it was about 30 years ago when I built those 2 levels? It was. I've also built smaller levels in Unreal Tournament, nothing spectacular but an interesting prospect. That is far more like the AutoCad that you're thinking of Rob. It uses subtractive builds. You start with a block and carve out what you want to build, quite a lot of fun but very different from building Doom levels even though the end results potentially can be similar.
Anyway, back to the project of learning and getting my own house in order before I fire me.
Hello Karate Ed: No worries, we hve to start somewhere ,hind site lol if only I had been developing this Rob's pipe Dream Doom levels for the past 30 years! My apologies , as I wasn't assigning delegating all that stuff to you , ha , holy crap , we would need a coding army to get her done or a damn AI code bot that makes us look like we are from the dark ages lol. I think the folks over at ID would have mercy on me and yes I would make sure to ask as I think i may actually have some of there original NeXT 68K boxes floating around here , seems all NeXT hardware comes through or gets touched (refurbished) by the black hole at one point or another.

Hey Rob, I wasn't suggesting that you were putting this all on me to try to do. No one person could do it, only a team would be able to but I see HOW it could be done and you're right, it would take a while. I think it would be the 32 levels that you would need, someone that could code the creature and other necessary shapes, schematics for those buildings you mentioned so a reasonable facsimile of them could be designed, the line thing for potential conversations.....I was just dreaming along with you buddy but it's doable, it just might take a couple years of work to achieve it.....and of course the right team mates.....also sound mods that make sense for the NeXT community......
Sometimes dreams become reality.
Have you checked out those videos yet? They are very good actually. The guy doing them hasn't done one in a long while, 3 years I think, but he's very good. He should be encourage to do more but my guess is he's following his musical path, that's certainly more important.
Just by doing a teleport, I've got a faster work flow. That's the important part, trying to get it down to doing things quite quickly then what you're suggesting is doable.

[/quote] Yes, cool videos ..... here is the black book on Doom, where the author Fabien Langard features some NeXT hardware and I helped him out on it ! Fun stuff.

It is so difficult for me to work these days until I have the hip replacement surgery done , I can hardly stand for 10 minutes, Not looking for sympathy , it is just frustrating as I'm on my 5th orthopedic Dr. , the previous 4 would not do the operation over fear of MRSA even though I have been cleared by the infectious disease Dr. . I find out my fate December 7th lol I'm assured Dr Hug lol yes that is his real name will be able to handle this operation and should any complications develop not a problem. Well if I wake up with one peg leg after the operation when ever it should be I'll know something went haywire lol ..... As a result I'm pacing myself to get things done, for whatever reason mainly sleep apnea they won't prescribe pain medication and because of my immune system being hammered by antibiotics , I have not had Embrel for my RA no worries I'm a tough guy and now I have doom lol ... I tried to install it from the Peanuts 3 CD onto Previous running NeXTSTEP but something is cockaroo so off to the post office to drop off my daily small packages for customers. as always working on a few NeXT systems as well .
Yeh Rob, you've not had an easy go and as such you've been in my prayers continually since I first told you that.
I also found a Book I have called 3D Game Alchemy for Doom, Doom II, Heretic and Hexen. It's by Steve Benner, et al. Don't know who that last guy is, et al. It was put out by Sams Publishing so I've started reading it, last night as bedtime reading.
It's interesting to see what's in there compared to this editor which is pretty fantastic....but.....if you do something wrong in it, it's quite a process to correct. Sometimes I think it's easier to start on the part that's the problem from scratch. I've seen a few weird walls, shimmering because I got the vertices all wrong or attached something to the wrong place. Yes it is possible to do that even in this beautiful editor.
Anyway, hope to see a couple examples of small wad files on your video feed, that would be awesome.

I found Doom View here
https://www.nextcomputers.org/NeXTfiles/Software/NEXTSTEP/Apps/Games/ is really understand how all Doom is coded in the background, it is interesting , for the graphics , it looks like 3 to 10 separate tiff files, kind of like when you draw and animated figure by a slight movement on each page and then by flipping the pages , it gives the illusion of walking. This makes sense as to how Animo worked as the cartoonists used to have to hand draw each frame 24 frames per second and Animo in NeXTstep changed everything , from Jon Hooper one of my customers
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z1OFfs7geaw I may be able to simply create Tiffs using Tiffany and simply name them the same as the Doom Characters and now all of a sudden the original name is staring all new characters lol weirdly I can't get oom.app to launch or doomII , they both bomb. Am I missing something lol? If it is the actual DOOM app I probably have several hundred copies of it here on old hard drives as I have played it in the past but not sure where the install package came from ..... I'll figure it out. Also there has to be a version for Mac OS trying to figure out where the heck is and I'm not opposed to just buying lol . I might just email Carmack or Romero and point them at this madness as they may be retired and looking for something to do lol, like the 80's called and they want your game back , Are you ready to do battle, generation Z says we have no game lol? . Ha I found DOOM for NeXT, Mac and Windows and it is free and working lol
https://www.techspot.com/downloads/5847-doom.html#google_vignette . I found out it works using the mouse lol as the keyboard playing key option seem's worse than nintendo game controller thumb mixed with carpal tunnel .
Port of the original Doom maps to Mac OS
https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/111229-redoomed-maclinuxbsd-port-of-id-softwares-1993-doom-map-editor-for-nextstep/ however Mac OS won't open it because it can not confirm it is free of malware :( What a pain so you can over ride it
Here's how to do it:
Control-click or right-click on the app in Finder.
Click on Get Info.
Choose the Override Malware Protection or Bypass Malware option.
Enter your admin password if required.
Check the Open Anyways and relaunch the app.
Ah, all my machines are either retro, NeXT or Windows. I have no Apples in the orchard.
I had no problem getting a teleport working, a bit more issue getting a door working but probably because I was trying something more advanced than I should be doing yet with the actual map so.....simple maps, simple techniques until I get it rolling. It's slowly coming back but the editor is doing a few things that I'm really not quite sure is happening, like walls way to high up in the air above the ceiling but as I said, something more complicated than I should be trying yet.

So Ultimate Doom has not been ported to Mac OS and only Windows , the original NeXT Doom Tools are ported called ReDoom. I think I'm fairly good with software lol so some recommendations I would have made and I'll see if I can actually find the original tools and load them onto NeXTSTEP as I suspect they must have a tutorial or how to .... I managed to create a NeXT Map and it has a grid on it. I've taken a gander at the various panel , the tool panel is similar to cad and a lot of other basic drawing tools , however I must missing something basic as normally you pick selection and set a start point then decide is your next move going to be a simple line lol , you pick the line but this is where they already loose me as the start point isn't set . obviously snap to grid would make it so easy . I end up having some random start point appear in my map and clicking from there makes the line go everywhere , the should and undo , that would make it easy to take a step back in your drawing.
Obviously I was hoping the Ultimate Doom builder worked on MAC OS lol so it must be part of some evil plan to force me to install Windows on my Mac which is pretty much as close to hell on Earth for me:). Source Exists for Ultimate Doom , I'm going to start a thread to see if it can ported over to Mac OS by one of our software GURU's on the Forum for my sanity.

My understanding was the ReDoom was a pretty good editor too. Unfortunately I'm not sure if it runs similarly to Ultimate Doom Builder.
For me to start anything basically I have to select one of the modes, usually lindefmode and then double mouse click on the point where I want to make my first line. I could also use something like Draw Rectangle Mode to achieve a square box if that's what I want.
To place a start player I have to choose Things mode and double left click on the screen within my map to place it. I left click it once and it turns green meaning it's been set.
On the level I'm working on right now I've got a door a couple rooms and a third room that will teleport to the other door connected rooms. I'm just playing right now to try to get familiar enough with the editor to do something useable. It's playable, very simple so far but haven't done the teleport yet. That won't really take me very long. I'll probably keep referring to the videos until I have it down pat, it's also helping me develop a good work flow with the editor.
I thought I saw something for Apple with Ultimate Doom Builder. Maybe I am mis-remembering.
I was trying to add an image but it wants a URL. The image is on my computer and when I try to link to that it's not too happy.
Ah well.......I'm sure I'm missing something simple. Anyway, kind of tired so me and my pussy cat have to get to bed.
Did this version not work for you?
https://zdoom.org/downloadsThere is a Mac version there but I'm about as conversant in Mac as you are in Windows.
Here is the beginnings of a small wad file that has a teleporter, door and only a few monsters in such large rooms. I'll be adding other things over the next few days but here's where I'm at. It's boring, far from finished and still lots of things that I'm thinking about doing to make it interesting but it gives you an idea where my mind is at.
Edit: Ok folks, you can still walk unharmed in the first 2 parts of the map but.....not so much in the last part of the map. It's starting to take a bit of shape, nothing special yet but you may struggle getting through the last part of this wad.
While going through this wad, please do so with an eye to detail in case I've messed up a texture alignment. Also any other suggestions will be gratefully received if there is something you would like me to do in a certain area. It's been a long time since I've done this and my brain is a bit on the old and slow side but I'm enjoying this so far. I have fixed one texture alignment in the last room under the overhang coming out of the big room. Notice the lighting is very smooth in it's transition from that room to the 'open' area.
So, I am very rusty at doing this but this editor is sweet. There is a ton of stuff that I have to learn about making wad files but it's coming along.
I think I've finished the + section of the wad am I'm now working on the 3 part of the wad. I have to focus them on them one at a time to try to finish it by the 10th of this month at which time I will post the final wad here for anyone that might want to try it. it's not going to be fantastic considering how much I have yet to learn on creating scintillating wads but it will be somewhat decent and hopefully without any silly errors in it.
I have sometimes had to recreate elements of the wad (mostly doors) because they for some reason failed after they had been working. I'm also sometimes feeling the pain of not have all the segments properly co-ordinated which can be fun to try to sort out but I think I've managed so far anyway. I'm trying to make sure lighting looks good but that's something that's subjective, what I think looks good might not in other's eyes.
I'm being my own tester right now which we all know that's a good starting point but this is a small wad, 3 small sections so that limits also what you can do. There really isn't time for me to do anything bigger and have it ready for the 10th so I hope you will all enjoy it once it's done.
Ed...... :-)
Just dragged a lindef by accident to a wrong place and had to reconstruct one of my switch/door assemblies because of it. I didn't know I'd done it until I went in to play the wad and my door and switch were no longer there. Twas a pain.
Edit: This and more has been straightened out. One has to be very careful, especially with lindefs because they can really cause a lot of havoc.
Anyway, almost done the 3 now and will have the center one to do an it's done.....
Ed...... :-)
Edit: I have finished the outside 2 portions of the wad, just the '0' to do now. I have some thoughts on it.
Ed...... :-)
Almost done, just have to try to make easy, middle and hard modes......don't really know how to do that yet.
Edit: I'm almost done. I have about 1/3 the '0' area to manipulate into something useful and it will be finished for consumption.
Ed...... :-)
Ok Folks,
The wad file is ready. It does have difficulty levels. Don't try nightmare mode, you will only last a few seconds if you do. Unless you're really lousy at Doom, you shouldn't play easy either, it's just too easy but then I've played this a thousand times it seems now so it may only be easy to me. I just wanted to give you guys options. I would play it in Hurt Me Plenty mode as that's where I think it's best for a challenge but not impossible. just to let you know, I've created a video for my daughter but won't post it here as it gives everything away. She doesn't have Doom2 so won't be playing it. I want people to have fun trying to solve this wad.
So Nitro, did you try the wad out and if so, what do you think? You can be honest with me, I worked in IT therefore it stands to reason that I have a thick skull.

Hi Ed,
I'm afraid to admit that I'm trying to figure out how to run a custom wad file. My DOOM and DOOM II floppy's are not readable any longer, so I purchased The Ultimate DOOM, Final DOOM, and DOOM II with Master Levels a while back from GOG.com, but I haven't set up a launcher to allow me to specify a custom wad file. My memory of running DOOM is pretty rusty. I'll get it figured out eventually (dosbox on Windows 10). I'm looking forward to trying out your level.

You could just go and get Ultimate Doom Builder and run it through that. That's what I did then you don't have to mess with DosBox......It's got instructions with it and wasn't that difficult.......and then you've also got an editor which allows you to join in the fun.
I also use GZDoom with it. It's used to run your test wads in the configuration. Pretty easy really.
btw, I also bought those off GOG.

I'll give that a try. Long term I'd like to find a port that will allow a higher resolution as the original DOOM can make me a little queasy. I'm not sure why as I've played Quake III Arena pretty consistently since it was released in 1999 and I don't have any issues with that. Thanks for the information.

You're most welcome. When I was playing Doom at the low res I had exactly the same problem. I have a Meta Quest 2 VR headset and used to have some 'sea sickness' but got over it quickly but Doom lowres is still queasy for me.
If you have any problems with getting this going (it really is pretty easy though) let me know and I'll see if there is any way I can help with it.
The resolution on this is pretty good, GZDoom is a take-of of ZDoom which came out with that higher resolution so it should take away the willies for you.
Hi
@KarateEd , thanks a lot for your level, I enjoyed it a lot and reached the end with 100% kills and zero ammo left, exactly as it should be ;D
As there are no spoiler tags in the forum, I can not really tell what I liked the most, but have to say, that the level looks very polished and professional.
For those who have issues to start the map (like I had), I have attached Ed's original map saved to slot MAP01 (in Eureka editor), so that you can play the level with command-line similar to this:
zdoom -4 -iwad iwads/2v19/doom2.wad -file ~/30D-MAP01.wad -skill 4Cheers, nuss

Glad you like it Nuss. Thanks for the very nice compliments.
It's a ways from professional but there is a little imagination in it for what few of the tools of the editor I used. It's been at least 25 years since I last did any maps and even that was with a different, much clunkier editor.
There really wasn't much time to get it done by the 10th and I surprised myself in getting it done early but you guys deserve a little Doom fun and I'm glad to have been able to supply a bit anyway.
So, how many tries did it take you to get through the level and I'm guessing skill 4 is the 2nd hardest level? Were you a 'sometimes' Doom player in the day or were you a fanatic (like me)?
Hi KarateEd,
"skill 4" is "Ultra-Violence", which let me die about 15 times before I was able to reach the end switch. And indeed I was quite an extensive Doom player (many years ago), especially tried to find and play through every custom level for Doom 1/2 ;)

Ah, thank you Nuss, it seems we are cut from the same Doom cloth. I was the same, especially with the complete 32 levels.....some really great ones there.
You've made me very happy. I didn't want it to be too easy and not too hard. That you got 15 plays out of it is wonderful and there' more to be had if you play Nightmare......I'm not sure anyone will get through that. I haven't even gotten out of the '3' yet but I've only tried a few times.
I hope that more people try to play it and post their experiences and what they used to do with Doom, casual, steady, fanatic, crazed....etc.....and how many times they tried it before they succeeded and then what level they played most often.
Ed...... :-)
I was able to get GZDoom installed and that's much better. It's going to take a little bit of work to get the key bindings set up, but I should be able to test your level soon. I have a feeling that I'll get beat up pretty good but it should be fun. Thanks for the help guys.

I think the w/a/d/s keys with mouse is default....I find that works very well and for sure you can get through this map using those. I don't bother with strafing, never got the hang of it and became good with basic controls.
Quote from: KarateEd on December 07, 2023, 01:04:26 PMYou're most welcome.
Hi Ed,
Thank you so much for the great level, man that was fun. I believe it took me 16 tries to get to the switch on Ultra-Violence. I agree with
@nuss, the level looks very polished and detailed. It has a good balance between not being too easy or too difficult to find your way through. I'm looking forward to playing it again tomorrow. :)
I was able to finally get the level running with GZDoom using the AceCorp Launcher.
gzdoom.exe -iwad doom2.wad -file 30D-MAP01 -skill 4I also managed to get rid of the queasy feeling by turning off player bobbing; I had forgotten about that option.
Thanks again for putting the work into a great level, it's amazing.
Hi
@KarateEd ,
just wanted to add, that two days ago I finished your level in "Nightmare" mode for the first time.
With more than 200 killed monsters, tons of monsters still around, more spawning, enough ammo, but with only 10% health left, in the end I tried running to the last door many times and finally got there, killed the monsters just to quickly click the end-button.
I literally died hundreds of tries. I had totally forgotten how hard "Nightmare" is, compared to "Ultra violence" ;D
Thanks again for your level, gave me some joyful hours :)
@Nitro, Oh, I didn't know about that option but the more that shows up here about how people are able to play it, the better chance people will play it. Thanks very much for the compliments, I'm very happy you like the level. I really wasn't sure whether it was any good or not but early reports suggest it works. Thank you.
@nuss, wow, you're a Doom star. I couldn't almost get started in Nightmare, just barely got near the transport at the end of the '3' when I tried, guess I'll have to give it another go as it's getting pretty easy on level 4. Very glad you've had some joyful hours, there's nothing like killing Doom creatures, is there?
Hello Karate Ed : Nice work on the level I died almost instantly lol my Doom skills are weak , note to self newby level. The Graphics are really good !

Glad you tried it Rob. I tended to make it so you could die immediately but you could down grade the level you start at. If you choose 1 for sure you should be able to finish it with a bit of practice. it's definitely more 'friendly' at that level and then you could build up your skills to Nightmare level. I hope you'll be able to finish in on some level so you can experience each portion of the level.
Thanks very much for the nice comments and do keep trying. It will get better.....

I'll finish it for sure at some point but it is fun to play.
Hey folks,
I had a critique on my wad file from another retro computing site and I've fixed those things the individual noticed. As per I'm attaching that updated wad file here so.....if you would kindly play this one rather than the old one, it's more accurate in that it will ensure you go the path intended.
I also found this flaw a couple days ago myself. This is what happens when you are your own tester. You sometimes miss critical things and a couple of these were critical.
Thanks,
Ed...... :-)
