This is a great video - so fun!
Makes me want to pull out my Cube.
I could swear I remember there was a snd.wad file or something like that, that I got sound working on my old NeXT cube back in the day. I'm pretty sure. But was like a separate wad file of some kind.
I have played Doom with commercial IWAD and all known wad-collections for hundreds of hours on my NeXTstation with in-game sound, but music did not work in-game.
So my music was either coming from the stereo-deck (Savatage, Megadeth, Metallica, ...), or sometimes from mod-payer (Amiga mods) on the slab.
With this in mind I could not believe that sound should not work in Doom and tried it out today, only to find that indeed the
Doom.app plays no sounds.
But then I remembered that I used
DoomII.app to play Doom version 1, ultimate and 2 (plus wads) with sound!
For starting Doom 1, copy doom.wad into
DoomII.app and rename doom2.wad to doom2.wad_.
Then start with
DoomII.app/DoomII -nomusic -scale 2 Unfortunately scale 4 does not work, like it used to work in
Doom.app.
Anyhow, this is the way to enjoy Doom 1 on a slab or cube with sound in double scale :)
Thanks
@nuss!
Well right there we've corrected the narrative that you can't get sound going! Didnt Omni or someone do the Doom game wrapper for ID? Perhaps they did the Doom2 port app.
I *may* be mistaken, but I could swear I did get music working somehow. I forget how. I remember there was some command line stuff with it, but I might be misremembering with the Doom2 Omni stuff and the original.
I remember playing the original with a friend on 2 networked machines in coop! We finished it like the day of the release. And I remember the music being spooky in some parts literally making us jump in some of the dark spots, and I could swear there was some eerie music there.
But maybe that 'mood' music is different from soundtrack music?
Hi
@zombie , yes
DoomII.app (and its beta version) have been developed by Omni Group (and id) according to the DoomII info panel.
Have searched through my Usenet archive, but could unfortunately not find any discussion nor hint of having music played in
Doom.app /
DoomII.app.
Anyhow there is 3 Nov 1995 post answer

In the BETA version the sound works fine.
So it seems that Omni introduced (at least) the sound with
DoomII.beta.NIHS.b.tar.gz, as there was never a beta version of
Doom.app as far as I know.
Also I am not aware of any difference in Doom between mood-music ("mood" is reverse "doom" :D) and soundtrack music. To my knowledge it is only separate sound (sfx) and music.
Might it be that you played the
DoomII.app with sound, and for music played the Doom MIDI files (extracted from WAD)? Experience would have been similar to playing with in-game music :)
I really like how he made short work of getting it on the net and testing it wow !
